Youl Sun

Winner of the second prize and the Audience Award at the 2023 Viseu International Piano Competition and the third prize at the Isangyun Competition in 2023, Pianist Youl Sun was brought to the classical music world's attention after receiving numerous awards at both domestic and international competitions. On a global scale, he won first place and the Polonaise Prize at the Asia-Pacific International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition. In addition, he took second place and Schubert Prize at the E-Piano Junior Competition in the USA.

 

In earlier years, he achieved first place at Nanpa Music Concours, Suri Music Concours, Sungjung Music Competition, Ehwa-Kyunghayng Music Competition, Kukmin Daily & Hansei University Music Competition, Korea Chopin Competition, and Youngchang Music Concours.

 

Youl Sun has performed with many great conductors, including Antoni Wit, Massimo Zanetti, Mark Russell Smith, Adrien Perruchon, Jonggi Lee, Jooyoung Jeong and Seokwon Hong, and collaborated with Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonie Korea, Minnesota Orchestra, Hankyung Philharmonic Orchestra, KORAIL Symphony Orchestra, KNIGA Symphony Orchestra and Yewon School Orchestra.

 

He has also played at many prestigious concert halls such as Salle Cortot in Paris, Yamaha Hall in Ginza (Japan), Seoul Arts Center, Lotte Concert Hall, Keimyung Arts Center, Gyeonggi Arts Center, GwangjuBitgoeul Citizen Culture Hall, Kumho Art Hall, Andong Culture & Arts Center. Moreover, he has held recitals and performed in Yamaha Rising Pianist Concert, Choi Ina Book Concert, ArtM Concert, Kumho Young Artist Concert, Kumho Prodigy Concert, The House Concert and July Festival, Gyeonggi Arts Center Peace & Piano Festival Discovery Concert, NWA Young Pianist Concert Series 2019, KNUA Beethoven 250th 'Sturm und Drang' and 2019-2020 Kukje Art Hall Series.

 

Youl Sun is expanding his musical sphere through a wide range of solo and chamber music repertoires. In 2022, he formed and made a debut as ‘Harang Duo’ with pianist Jae Sung Bae, and the duo will continue to bring colourful piano duo works to audiences. As a soloist, he was invited to perform F. Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 at the 11AM Concert of the Seoul Arts Center.

 

Youl Sun’s 2023 highlights include a solo recital in June, and a concert with the Philharmonie Korea and conductor Adrien Perruchon in September at the Seoul Arts Center. Harang Duo was invited to recitals at the Seoul Arts Center’s ‘Rachmaninoff Series’ and Andong Culture & Art Center’s ‘Brunch Concert’.

 

Born in 2000 in Korea, Youl Sun studied with Dae-jin Kim at the Korea National University of Arts. In 2023, he graduated from Schola Cantorum de Paris with Cycle de Perfectionnement and is currently studying at Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris with Oliver Gardon.
